Bed-time Story... Heheheh....

This time's post is all about the story of morphine.

Morphine is isolated (taken out) from the opium.

The opium's potent effect was discovered between 1805 - 1816 by Friedrich Wilhelm Serturner.

He was a pharmacist's assistant.

He was intent on learning reason of opium produced the effects.

He isolated a yellowish-white crystalline compound by using hot water and ammonia.

He tested the isolated products on some dogs, and foolishly on himself and 3 young boys.

From his experiment, his dogs died.

Then, he discovered it would relieve pain and euphoric, besides of respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting and constipation.

In addition, he found the isolated product was ten time as potent as opium in relieving pain.

So, less drug is used to produce the same effect as raw opium.

Later, he used "morphine" word after Morpheus, the Greek god of dream.
